i'll post in you tonight, livejournal!

i think the internet will eventually destroy us all, but could also be our salvation. where else will i learn skills like how to skin a deer or can home-grown tomatoes? the general populace no longer knows these skills! what would become of society if all of a sudden, all electronics ceased functioning? i bet the population of the earth would drastically reduce within one year. DRASTICALLY reduce.

ideas like this make me want to learn how to make a bow and some arrows. they make me want to live among the amish for a time, just to learn.

how can i help my friends if i can't help myself?

and maybe it's just the nyquil talking.

so i've decided to go back to school.

wait, did i already post that? going back to check.... okay, it looks like i didn't.

so here's the deal. i went to a career counselor, who told me that i should be a counselor. not a career counselor, though, which is okay, even though his job seemed awesome and he seemed to love it. and there would definitely be things to love about it. i mean, seriously, giving people direction? telling them what they're good at that they may not have realized?

anyway i digress. so the counselor told me to be a counselor. which is awesome because i've wanted to do counseling, and have considered for a long time how to become one, focusing probably in marriage/family therapy and addictions. his advice was to get a masters in social work and get licensed, because i could hang out a shingle with an MSW.

i'm looking into a program at IUPUI right now, since that's here in the city. hopefully i'll get in! if not, then.... i'll do something else to get me there. but i have to find something. i knew i wanted to be a counselor, but now that i've had outside confirmation that it's something i'd be good at and it's something i should be doing, i'm raring to get to it. i'm excited about being my own boss, setting my own schedule, and all that. and if i hire the right administrative office assistant, i won't have to worry too much about the business end of things, which doesn't really interest me anyway. taxes and blah. whatever. of course, melissa suggested i take a business course along with the program so i have that stuff under my belt. she also suggested i try to get a practice with someone else who's already established and has similar goals/views. i have a good wife. if she were interested in keeping a business organized, i'd totally hire her as my administrative assistant.

to end, let me lend my endorsement to Dr. Jack Fadely of Fadely and Debrota. he reminds me of a more laid-back version of Law and Order's Jack McCoy.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
started attending a support group

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
haha, resolve this!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth or get pregnant?
my friends scott and cynthia had a baby! i don't remember anyone else at this moment. probably someone really close to me is reading this and pissed now.

4. Did anyone close to you get married?
my friend cindy got married!

5. Did anyone close to you die?
my grandma

6. Travel?
not really anything special

7. Did you move anywhere?
no

8. What was the best month?
i've been fairly ambivalent and apathetic about 2008.

9. what would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
focus and determination

10. What date(s) from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
see answer to #8

11. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
1 full year away from porn

12. Did you suffer illness or injury?
rhinovirus!

14. What song will always remind you of 2008?
"scrubs" by TLC

20. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? a little bit of this, a little bit of that... i've realized i'm not going to stay at my job forever, which has both relieved and frustrated me.
ii. thinner or fatter? i think a little fatter
iii. richer or poorer? not so much money as last year, even with my 2% raise (ha!), but i'm growing spiritually and such.

21. What do you wish you'd done more of?
being assertive and not so damned codependent

22. What do you wish you'd done less of?
being passive and so damned codependent

23. How will you be spending New Year's Eve/Day?
next year? who knows? this passed one i spent with my lovely wife melissa. we were playing "Lego Star Wars II" when the ball dropped. about 12:10 she looks at the clock and says "Oh we missed it! What was the best concert you've been to this year?
i went to one concert -- it was a local college jazz ensemble. i also went to a musical (the producers) which was hysterical and amazing.

27. What was your favorite TV program?
x-files

28. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
getting closer to God than i have

36. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
grunge utilitarian, same as many of the years before

37. What kept you sane?
my support group

38. What political issue stirred you the most?
geez, what a loaded question! the election was pretty stirring. i have to say, regardless of who i voted for, that i got really tired of seeing obama/biden stuff all over the place as though it were a fashion thing, like how everyone and their brother here in indianapolis wears a peyton manning jersey.

39. Who did you miss?
your mom

happy new year, everybody!

i had a dream last night that i got blackout drunk, and woke up with a handlebar mustache and a mullet. also, i had a few little clumps of dirt under my eyes. how very strange!

it might come from the fact that i was contemplating my 2009 halloween costume. melissa suggested i go as a chef, and i thought it might be fun to have a twirly italian chef mustache to go with. ey! i'm a gonna make a big a pizza pie!
